Last June, the Government of Canada amended the Criminal Code to allow for Medical Assistance in Dying for Canadians who are:
- at least 18 years of age and eligible for publically funded health services in Canada
- competent to consent to the termination of life without coercion or undue influence, including at the time of administration
- suffering from a grievious and irremediable medical condition that causes suffering that is intolerable to the individual
Vancouver Coastal Health has released guidelines to provide some clarity and assist care providers with the new law. In addition, Three Links will be developing our own policy that will provide direction to staff as to what to do when a resident requests medical assistance in dying. Over the coming weeks, our Director of Care, Faria Ali, will be engaging staff and stakeholders to help develop a policy that supports the Three Links mission and values and reflects your feedback.
